Members of the Doctoral Programme Committee
The doctoral programme committee comprises a chair, vice-chair and four professor members merited in doctoral education and representing the central fields of research of the school. One of the professorial members may be from another school within Aalto University. In addition, the committee has a doctoral student member representing the fields of research of the school. The committee elects a vice chair from among its members. The committee has five professors and one doctoral student as deputy members.
The term of the Doctoral Programme Committee is three calendar years. The term of the current committee continues until the end of year 2028. Student representatives are appointed for one calendar year at a time, by the proposal of the Student Union AYY.

In addition with listed committee meetings, programme invites thesis advisors and supervisors for special events, and arranges Extended Doctoral Programme Committee meetings. There are only discussion items on the extended doc. committee meetings, no decision items.

Tasks of the Committee
The doctoral programme committee shall
1) put forth proposals to the school academic committee on the doctoral programme curriculum, degree requirements and admissions criteria;
2) develop the school’s doctoral programme content and joint studies;
3) put forth proposals to the school academic committee on the doctoral research fields;
4) put forth proposals to the dean regarding the admission of doctoral students;
5) appoint the preliminary examiners of doctoral theses and decide on granting permissions for the public examination of the theses;
6) appoint persons to serve as opponent(s) in the public examinations;
7) evaluate doctoral theses;
8) appoint the examiners of licentiate theses;
9) evaluate licentiate theses 10) make decisions on doctoral programme development and quality assurance, and on the processing of feedback;
11) consider any other matters assigned by the dean or set forth in the degree regulations.
In addition, the doctoral programme committee shall perform the following tasks (unless it has assigned them to the chair):
- Appoint a supervising professor and advisor(s) for the doctoral student;
- Decide the degree language of the doctoral student, and the topic and language of the licentiate's or doctoral thesis;

Decide on the date and language of the of public examination of the doctoral thesis, and appoint the custos for it.
The chair of the doctoral programme committee shall keep contact with Aalto University’s other doctoral programme committees in order to develop the procedures used and ensure consistency between them and preserve the consistency between the different fields of education in science and technology.
