Title: Quantum Photonics using Site-Controlled Quantum Dots and Photonic Crystal Cavities

Abstract: 

One of the emerging platforms for realizing quantum technologies consists of on-chip generation and manipulation of quantum light. In this scheme, single or multiple photon states are generated by quantum emitters and are processed within integrated photonic devices in order to transmit and manipulate quantum information. This talk will overview recent progress in this area, notably the use of site-controlled quantum dots (QDs) as the quantum emitters and photonic crystal (PhC) cavities and waveguides employed for capturing, routing and processing the resulting quantum states of light. The site-controlled QDs are grown in pyramidal pits by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy, which yields ordered QD arrays with nm precision of positioning.  The PhC photonic-confinement structures are built around the QDs using electron beam lithography and dry etching.  Examples of the use of such integrated structures in on-chip single-photon transmission and in discovering new features of cavity quantum electrodynamics are presented and discussed.

Prof. Eli Kapon received his PhD in Physics from Tel Aviv University, Israel, in 1982. He then spent two years as a Chaim Weizman postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech, California, where he worked on semiconductor lasers and laser arrays.  From 1984 till 1993 he was with Bellcore, New Jersey, first as member of technical staff and later as District Manager, working on integrated optics and low-dimensional nanostructures, and managing the Quantum Structures and Integrated Optoelectronics Districts.  His work at Bellcore led to the first demonstration of quantum wire lasers. In 1993 he joined EPFL, Switzerland, as Professor of Physics. His Laboratory developed pyramidal quantum dots, their integration with photonic crystal systems, and wafer fused VCSELs. 

In 2001 he founded BeamExpress, a startup company dedicated to development and commercialization of wafer-fused VCSELs.  In 1999-2002 he founded the Tel Aviv University Center for Nanosciences and Naotechnologies and served as its first Director. 

Prof. Kapon is Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the American Physical Society and the IEEE. He is recipient of a Humboldt Research Award and the IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer Award.
