Jari Vepsäläinen

Assistant Professor of Computational Design and Synthesis

My research focuses on advanced data-driven, physics-based, and hybrid modelling, and on the computational synthesis of engineering systems.

Mechatronics design is the holistic engineering design of electromechanical actuators and systems, taking into account their control and perception. My work centres on the design of energy-efficient systems and on developing new tools for designing them.

Energy-efficient systems are developed using detailed physics-based models validated against real experiments, which in mechatronic systems also requires control design. Exploring the vast search space of possible complex system designs calls for new tools. In my research, I develop tools that help engineers design and explore more possibilities, such as generative systems that let designers interact with design tools in natural language to quickly create editable schematics, requirements, surrogate models, or simulation models.

The projects I have worked on span mechanics, robotics, hydraulics, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, work machines, autonomous mobility, IoT, and digital twins.
