Mode of the course

The course is offered as a self-learning online package with optional hybrid sessions. The optional hybrid sessions offer students an opportunity to discuss research ethics questions with a panel of experts and receive advice for their research ethics and integrity questions.

In 2026-2027 the course is taught twice, in period II (19.10.-29.11.2026) and in period IV (1.3.-18.4.2027). Students can complete the course assignments at their own pace within the duration of the course.

Scope of the course

2 ECTS, equivalent to approximately 54 hours of student's work

Previous course versions (LC-L1010)

The course LC-L1000 Research Ethics for Doctoral Students can be substituted with the previous course LC-L1010 Research Ethics for Doctoral Students and vice versa. Instructions for substituting the course in your credit plan in Sisu.

It is also possible that you have received credits for an equivalent course with a School-specific code, such as ARTS-LV, SCI-LV etc. These study attainments also can be used to substitute the LC-L1000 Research Ethics for Doctoral Students - but remember to check the actual contents of your earlier study attainment, as the LV-course codes might have also been used for other courses than the Research ethics course, which of course cannot be used to substitute the course.

Course registration

Only doctoral students with a study right towards a doctoral degree at Aalto University are accepted to the course. The registration to the course is open until one week before the end of the course, as it is possible to complete the course assignments at you own pace within the course timeline.

Register for the course in Sisu (remember to include it in your credit plan, i.e. study plan in Sisu first). The course description and learning outcomes are also available in Sisu.

This course helped me think of ethical concerns of my own research which is quite useful at my early stage of doctoral research.
