Support for challenges during your doctoral studies
Doctoral students may encounter different kind of challenging situations during their studies. This page presents the support network of doctoral students and instructions for how to proceed if doctoral students experience any type of harrasment, bullying or misconduct, or have issues with supervision.
Challenges with your doctoral studies?
- Whatever challenge you have, the primary contact is your supervising professor. You can always also discuss with your thesis advisor. If they cannot be of help, you can contact the Doctoral education services of your programme and discuss how to proceed.
- Aalto study psychologist help doctoral students for example when they have motivational problems, difficulties to manage time or get things done or lot of anxiety or stress related to their doctoral process.
- If you want to discuss your career and life planning, you can apply for career coaching or meet with career counselling psychologist.
- If you need confidential support for research integrity matters or wish to report misconduct or violation of research integrity guidelines, you can contact Aalto's research integrity advisors. Aalto also has an ethical channel where the members of the university community may report misconduct.
- If you have experienced or you are unsure whether you have encountered inappropriate treatment or harassment, or if your feel that the code of conduct was not followed, take the matter further:
- HR services support all Aalto personnel in employment matters and in their wellbeing.
- If you have physical or mental health issues or concerns, please consult healthcare services. Aalto employee's can use Aalto's Occupational health care services, or you can use the public healthcare services of your municipality (in Helsinki) or wellbeing services counties (in Espoo and Vantaa), or private services.
- Aalto offers Workplace Mediation for enhancing the cooperation in teams and solving conflicts.
- Solution-focused coaching to support your wellbeing at work for all Aalto doctoral students and employees: a practical way of creating a positive change related to e.g., wellbeing at work, motivation or self-leadership, with the support of a coach.
- If you need a second opinion of something related to supervision, you can contact Ombudsperson for doctoral students.
- Aalto chaplains’ services are available to all members of the Aalto community regardless of religion or worldview.
Social media and online harassment
Social media can be used to increase your researcher visibility by boosting awareness of your research projects and publications. Always consider whether your activity in social media affects your credibility as a researcher and expert, as well as representative of Aalto University. It is not possible to control discussions in the social media, you can only try to influence them. You may become the target of harassment and bullying when you comment or discuss sentive topics related to your research in public. Aalto's social media guidelines include instructions on what to do in case of harassment or online shaming.
Preventing harassment and inappropriate conduct
Aalto University expects its employees and students as well as any other members of the community to act responsibly and treat each other with respect. Any harassment, inappropriate treatment or bullying is prohibited. All members of the community have a responsibility for the atmosphere and well-being of their workplace and studying community.
