About the minor
The Sustainable Entrepreneurship minor gives students the opportunity to explore how entrepreneurship can be used to address the world’s pressing sustainability issues. The minor does this by giving students a mix of ‘hands-on’ courses focused on designing ventures and creating startup ideas (namely, the ‘TU’ coded courses offered by AVP), as well as conceptual courses geared towards understanding sustainable entrepreneurship at a broad level (namely, the ‘MNGT’ coded courses offered by the School of Business’s entrepreneurship unit). This mix of hands-on and conceptual courses teaches students how to make sustainability-oriented startups actually work, and how to choose startup ideas that can have the greatest impact on systems change. It is only by understanding both perspectives – venture-level and systems-level – that students can make the greatest impact.
There are 19 core ECTS that all students must take. These credits lay the foundation for the degree. There are also 6 ECTS of electives that allow students to customize their learning. For the electives, students wishing to understand the role that entrepreneurship can play in addressing Sustainable Development Goals in the Global South (e.g., in less developed countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America) are encouraged to take Market-based development in the Global South. Students wishing to focus their elective studies primarily on addressing social issues in the Global North are encouraged to take Social Innovation.
Students are free to take the courses in any order they prefer. However, if personal study plans allow so, the following order is suggested:
- MNGT-E3004 Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Markets, and Systems Change
- TU-E4101 Entrepreneurship Lab
- TU-E4200 Sustainable Development Goals as Entrepreneurial Business Opportunities
- Choice of elective course
When planning minor studies, please take into consideration that some of the courses may have defined limitations as to course sizes and priorities in participation. Please see course descriptions for further information.
