Content of the Minor
Pack-Age is a transdisciplinary sustainable packaging design minor uniting visual and structural design, strategic branding, material technology, and user experience design to project-based learning. Students work in teams on real-life design projects in collaboration with companies. For companies, the projects offer a way to connect with the experts of the future and get fresh ideas and new insights. Creative problem-solving is a key concept. Project work is supported by expert supervision and guidance. Student teams conduct background research and user studies before starting concept design, and iterative packaging prototyping. By collaborating with teachers from different schools, Pack-Age offers a comprehensive take on sustainable packaging design including various perspectives to strategy, branding, production and technology, retail, and user experience. Students conduct research with primary and secondary research methods in order to study the opportunities and limitations of the project scope and how sustainability can be implemented to the project in the product, packaging and the system levels.
Structure of the minor
The minor is structured to follow a double-diamond design process, in which the first diamond comprises of a course called Design Insight (9 ECTS). It is followed by a workshop AXM-E0101 Workshop Period 1 (3 ECTS) and Art of Packaging (9 ECTS), which comprise together the second diamond with the focus on the creative practices of packaging design and iterative prototyping and testing. Students need to take both Design Insight and Art of Packaging as they both involve project work in teams with an external partner. (Workshop is elective)
