Being on a waiting list means that the applicant has not succeeded well enough to be admitted. Each study option will admit no more than their maximum intake. Those who have been admitted are the ones who have succeeded the best in the evaluation process. If the applicant is not among this group, but the application has not been rejected, the applicant is placed on the waiting list.

If the application has been rejected, it is not possible to be placed on the waiting list or to be admitted.

The evaluation criteria are informed on the web pages of the study options.

If an admitted applicant declines their offer of admission or does not accept the offer by the deadline, the applicant highest on the study option’s waiting list will be admitted. Applicants can be admitted off the waiting list until 14 June, 2027.

If you are admitted off the waiting list, you will receive an email to the email address you have given in the application system. The deadline to accept the admission offer received from the waiting list is by 21 April 2027 at 15.00 (3 pm, UTC +3) or within 7 days of the admission notification. Please be reminded to check all your email folders regularly if you are placed on the waiting list.

The number of applicants admitted off the waiting list cannot be estimated in advance. It is not possible to comment on the probability of being admitted off the waiting list.

Admission Services or the study options will not provide information on the number of applicants accepting the admission offer or being admitted off the waiting list. The university will only contact those applicants who are admitted from the waiting list. Those applicants will be contacted via email.

Applicants admitted off the waiting list cannot get a scholarship. Scholarship decisions have been made before the publishing of the admission results and the scholarships have been allocated to the best applicants. The programmes may also have decided not to award any scholarships. There is no waiting list system in place for scholarships.

Students who are liable to tuition fees and are admitted off the waiting list must cover the tuition fee, living expenses (at least 800 euros per month) and other study related costs from their own financial resources. Aalto University does not have additional scholarships or other financial support for students.

You can accept the admission offer to your second study option conditionally (by the deadline set for accepting the admission offer) and choose to remain on a waiting list for your first study option. You can stay on the waiting list until admitting applicants off the waiting list ends (14 June, 2027).

Acceptance of the study place will become binding, if you are not admitted off the waiting list to your first study option. If you are admitted off the waiting list to your first study option, the acceptance of the study place will be transferred to your first study option automatically and become binding.

If you were admitted to your second study option and chose to remain on the waiting list for your first study option, you can change the conditional acceptance of the admission offer to your second study option as binding (if it has not changed already) and stop being on the waiting list. This change cannot be withdrawn. 

You can enrol to the university only after the conditional acceptance of the study place has become binding.

Note that a conditional acceptance of the admission offer cannot be changed to cancellation of accepting the admission offer. In that sense, also a conditional acceptance is binding.

Note that scholarships are study-option-specific. If you were granted a scholarship to your second study option, it does not transfer to your first study option if you are admitted off the waiting list. You lose the scholarship, if you do not accept the study place bindingly to your second study option. If you wish to receive the scholarship and start studies in your second study option, accept the study place to your second study option bindingly.

The grades and study success of the applicant are not good enough. Also, the time consumed for studies may not meet the requirements. If the evaluation criteria include a certain limit for GPA or other grades, the applicant does not fulfil this requirement.

The application fulfills the general eligibility criteria and it has been evaluated by the study option. The application does not fulfill the study-option-specific eligibility criteria.

The applicant’s degree may be suitable for the programme, but at a closer look, the individual courses do not fulfil the prerequisite knowledge required for the programme.

The application fulfills the general eligibility criteria and it was evaluated by the study option. 

The outcome of the study-option-specific evaluation did not qualify for admission. The application may have been insufficient in terms of study-option-specific documents or it did not rank high enough in the overall evaluation to qualify for admission this year.

A large part of the contents of the applicant's previous studies or other relevant experience are similar to the educational goals of the programme in question. Thus the programme will not sufficiently offer the applicant new knowledge to justify their selection as a master’s degree student.

The application documents required by the study option were not submitted, or they were partially missing, or their content does not comply with the guidelines of the study option.

This reason for rejection is used automatically for those applicants who were placed on the waiting list but were not admitted by the closing date of the waiting list.

The general eligibility criteria have not been fulfilled and application has not been forwarded to study-option-specific evaluation.
