SUSTAFIT
The SUSTAFIT project supports global industrial and societal goals to replace unsustainable processes and materials with more environmentally friendly solutions. SUSTAFIT addresses the sustainability of nonwovens from different perspectives and aims to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of nonwovens and to increase the application areas of more sustainable solutions. The goal is to increase the market share of sustainable and purpose-built nonwovens.

As an important first step, the SUSTAFIT project will increase knowledge about ways to promote sustainability by product segment, i.e. describe sustainability strategies for different nonwoven application areas. This will help operators objectively understand the most impactful routes to improving sustainability for them.
In addition, the project complements the jointly identified knowledge gaps on ways to effectively increase the usability of sustainable and recycled fibers in nonwovens and on how the properties of raw materials and the manufacturing process affect the properties of nonwoven products.
One specific objective of the project is to improve the water repellency and antimicrobial performance of sustainable fibers. These are collectively seen as the most significant barriers to the wider use of sustainable fibers in nonwoven applications. The SUSTAFIT project will generate new knowledge on these jointly identified research needs through practical demonstrations and by engaging stakeholders to jointly evaluate new value chain opportunities.
