We seek to understand the foundations of what computers can and cannot do, which computational tasks can be solved efficiently and how, and which tasks are hard no matter how clever the programming.
Research in Computer Science
Aalto University's Department of Computer Science advances knowledge through research that combines scientific excellence with real-world relevance. As the distance between fundamental research and industrial application is often short in computer science, the two reinforce one another: we aim to be both an internationally leading institution for basic research and a driving force behind economic growth and European digital sovereignty.
We are loosely organised around seven broad research areas, complemented by three cross-cutting themes. Multidisciplinarity and intellectual diversity are among the department's key assets: we draw on collaboration across these areas to advance breakthroughs from the fundamental to the interdisciplinary, and to create impact together with our partners in academia, industry, and society.
