Course Curriculum of Doctoral Studies in Finance

Course curriculum of Doctoral Studies in Finance in 2026-2028 at Aalto University School of Business. The total is 60 ECTS credits.

During their doctoral studies students are expected to regularly participate in the Helsinki Finance Seminars and to present their research at Aalto Finance BB seminars, GSF research workshops and/or NFN PhD workshops.

1. General Research Studies, 48 ECTS credits

  • Academic Writing and Paper Presentation Clinic (2 ECTS credits)
  • Research Ethics for Doctoral Students (2 ECTS credits)
  • Advanced Econometrics 1 D (5 ECTS credits)
  • Advanced Econometrics 2 D (5 ECTS credits)
  • Courses in Advanced Microeconomics (10 ECTS credits (5 ECTS per course))
  • Theoretical Asset Pricing (6 ECTS credits)
  • Empirical Asset Pricing (6 ECTS credits)
  • Theoretical Corporate Finance (6 ECTS credits)
  • Empirical Corporate Finance (6 ECTS credits)

2. Research Field Studies, 12 ECTS credits

  • Special Courses in Finance (3-6 ECTS credits)
  • Other suitable courses in finance, economics, research methods and other related disciplines organized by the Aalto University School of Business, GSF, Helsinki GSE, FDPE, NFN and other universities, including collaborative networks that the School of Business is involved with. The courses or summer schools students plan to include in this section must be agreed on in advance with the director of the GSF (Head of doctoral studies in Finance).
  • If a doctoral student has already completed and included above compulsory or research field related doctoral courses in the master's degree, one needs to replace these courses. These individually agreed replacements do not have to be courses. Also, conference presentations, summer schools, literature reviews, publications/papers not related to doctoral dissertation, teaching, etc. qualify.These should always be agreed in advance with the Head of Doctoral Studies in Finance.
