Information about the Research Network

Network for the Critical Study of Technological Hope brings together scholars and others interested in how technological hope is imagined, mobilized, and contested in contemporary societies. The network is open for people in all career stages and grows out of a Finnish context but welcomes international participants.

The network provides a space for dialogue that crosses disciplinary and institutional boundaries, linking the humanities, social sciences, and technology-oriented fields. One of the constituting values of the network is to develop as a collectively built community. The network was born from the collaboration of researchers exploring themes of technological hope. Currently the network's email list and website are maintained by the team of the SUSTHOPE research project lead by Johanna Ahola-Launonen. 

Email List

At the core of the network's activities is the Criticaltechnohope email list, which provides members with a channel to share information and engage in dialogue. The mailing list can be used for sharing research updates, calls for papers, event announcements, and discussions related to the critical study of technological hope and hype, techno-optimism and techno-pessimism, and the broader role of expectations in shaping sociotechnical futures.

We warmly encourage you to write shortly in the message who you are, so we can get to know the members of the network. We would also be delighted to hear in what way you are interested in the topic and if you have any ideas regarding the network's activities and development!

We are planning to organize a meeting for the members of the network in the spring of 2026.
