Plan your courses in your Credit plan (called study plan in Sisu) (more instructions: Doctoral personal study plan DPSP).
Doctoral studies typically comprise of both regular courses and individual studies.

At Aalto University, curriculum is planned and confirmed for two academic years. Each doctoral programme has it's own curriculum, which lists the compulsory and optional courses that are offered and/or accepted to be included in the degree, i.e. the degree requirements.
Valid for doctoral students who start their studies 1.8.2024-31.7.2026. Students who have started their studies earlier can also switch to complete their studies according to the new curricula.
Valid for doctoral students who have started their studies 1.8.2022-31.7.2024.
The number of credits required for a doctoral degree was reduced from 40 to 30 ECTS starting from 1 August 2024. The change affected the Schools of technology (CHEM, ELEC, ENG and SCI) and ARTS. School of Business continues with 60 ECTS.
Doctoral students who have started their studies earlier than 1 August 2024 have the possibility to graduate with the old degree structure and scope until 31 December 2027 (or without any time limit if they have completed all the required credits before 1 August 2024). They can also transfer to study according to the new degree structure, if they so wish.
Aalto University Teacher Services offers pedagogical courses to faculty members. Doctoral students who are engaged in teaching and are interested in developing their own teaching, can apply to the courses.
Courses marked with FINDOCNET* are independent online courses, where students complete the course readings and assignments indepently at their own pace, and then report to the Doctoral education services to receive the credit. The Career Course also includes online seminars.

Language and communication courses for doctoral students can be included in the degree, as long as they are included in the students' confirmed Doctoral personal study plan DPSP. Most of our doctoral programmes also offer you a chance to include up to 6 ECTS of minimum A1 level Finnish/Swedish courses in your degree.
Take a look at the courses offered by the Aalto University Language Centre and in cooperation with higher education institutions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area (KiViTa). KiViTa for personnel courses are open for all doctoral students, regardless of their employment status.
Aalto also offers language and multicultural trainings for the employees. Also note the free-form discussion clubs on Finnish language and culture.
Doctoral+ (Tohtori+) is a cooperation agreement between certain Finnish universities and it is in force from 1 September 2025 onwards. Under this agreement doctoral students can apply free-of-charge for a fixed-term right to complete courses that will be included in their doctoral degree at another university that is part of the agreement.
Doctoral students must always agree on the courses to be completed with their supervising professor first. To apply for a study right for a course, please follow the instructions that the university in question has given. Each university will specify their course offering, typically study rights are granted for doctoral level courses.

A number of Finnish universities have partnered to offer doctoral courses to their students: Hanken, LUT University, Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland, University of Jyväskylä, University of Lapland, University of Oulu, University of Turku, University of Vaasa and Åbo Akademi. Cross-institutional studies mean that you can complete studies at another Finnish Higher Education Institution. If your programme belongs to a cross-institutional study network, you can take courses agreed in the agreement at another Finnish Higher Education Institution. Aalto University has several cross-institutional networks, and for some of the agreed courses in network, you can now enroll through the cross-institutional study functionalities in Sisu.
Some cross-institutional study networks are open to all students at Aalto, some are limited to specific programmes or research fields.

Doctoral students often complete courses in other universities. If you complete courses outside Aalto University, you must apply for credit transfer, unless the arrangement is under cross-institutional study network. Doctoral studies typically also include individual studies (custom course credit).

If you are a doctoral student at one of Aalto University's partner universities with an agreement about course co-operation, you are able to apply for a study right for certain courses, following the terms of the partnership agreement.
