AI Campus Breakfast - Industry Transition
Join Mikhail Kuklin, Senior Data Platform Architect at Starship Technologies and holder of a PhD in Computational Materials Science, as he shares his experience of transitioning between academia and industry.
Drawing on his own path, from computational materials science through consultancy and the media-tech sector to building the data platform behind autonomous delivery robots at Starship, Mikhail will discuss what the transition actually involves: which skills from a PhD carry over (and which don't), what day-to-day work in industry looks like, and how to market yourself when your CV is tailored for academia. He'll also reflect on how career strategies differ between the two worlds, and why self-leadership matters more once you step outside the structure of a research group.
The session will benefit PhD and postdoctoral researchers, whether you are considering such a transition or simply curious about career paths beyond academia, and will provide insights as well as an opportunity for discussion.
Breakfast including tea and coffee will be provided for in-person attendees.
Join us at the Otaniemi AI Factory Hub (4th floor, Maarintie 8, Espoo) on the 26 August at 10:00 EEST. The event will also be held online, starting slightly later at 10:15 EEST, to allow on-site participants time to grab breakfast and settle in.
The number of spots on-site is limited so please register as soon as possible, registration is open until 14th August 2026.
LUMI AI Factory is an EU-funded project that provides computational and technical support, which helps researchers accelerate their work and focus on their research. We provide training and research software engineer support for researchers, free of charge.
