Abstract
In and through communication, we encounter many voices: voices that are explicit and implicit, familiar and unfamiliar, human and other-than-human, present and remembered. These voices do not merely participate in communication; they shape what is made possible and what becomes enacted as experience continues to unfold.
This talk brings a communicative-constitutive perspective to questions of voice, collective care, and (counter)spacing academia. Starting by looking back on my own way of coming to think of communication differently and more multivocally in studying organizational phenomena and processes, I’ll turn toward looking more inward, contemplating, among other things, the role of the researcher in sensing more of the extra-linguistic and advocating for particular voices, but also how we might build more caring spaces in academia through our everyday practices.
To do so, I bring experiences, data, and first ideas from two ongoing research projects. Altogether, with this talk, I seek to explore the entanglement of voice, communication, care, and counterspace, considering what might become possible when we pay closer attention to the ways in which we participate in constituting the (academic) worlds we inhabit and bring to life.
About the speaker
Ellen Nathues is an Assistant Professor of Organization, Collaboration & Communication at the University of Twente, the Netherlands. She studies how people come together and make meaning in collaborative, plurivocal settings, attending to how organizing processes emerge, evolve, and sometimes come undone through relational, processual, and multimodal approaches.
A key concern in her work is analytical sensibility and methodological reflexivity: how the researcher is always part of what is being analyzed, and how analysis itself can be made more explicit through practices of noticing and writing. Increasingly, her work also engages with questions of academic practice itself, including how we might do scholarship differently.
Her research has been published in Organization Studies, Human Relations, Strategic Organization, and Culture and Organization, as well as in edited volumes.
