KiePe network collaboration

Aalto University, the University of Helsinki, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics have launched a new network to promote studies in languages and communication.

Founded in 2025, KiePe – the network for language centres’ pedagogy, teaching, and research – opens up the language course offering to staff and students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Through the network collaboration, students at each university can also choose language and communication courses from the offerings of the other network universities. The collaboration expands students’ opportunities to take courses, for example in terms of study modes and schedules. In addition, entirely new languages will be offered at many of the network universities.

Registration for the autumn language courses at the different universities is now open!

This autumn, registration for language and communication studies within KiePe – the network for language centres’ pedagogy, teaching, and research – has been added to the cross-institutional study service and is now open.

There is a range of languages from beginner to advanced levels, with various study modes and schedules. Courses follow the study periods of the organising university. Cross-institutional study is possible only when your study right at your home university is valid and you are registered as attending. You register for a course in your institution’s Sisu or Peppi, in the same way you would register for your own institution’s teaching.

In Sisu: Search -> Search for courses -> Select cross-institutional courses: KiePe-Language studies network -> Search

Once you have completed the study unit, the completion will be transferred automatically to your records in Sisu.

Language studies for Aalto students at Hanken

Aalto University and Hanken School of Economics have signed an agreement on cross-institutional studies in languages and communication. The agreement gives Aalto University degree students the opportunity to study the following subjects at Hanken: Spanish, German, business communication in French, English and Swedish, Swedish as a foreign language; and tandem courses (Each One Teach One).

The language courses taken at a partner university may be included in your Aalto degree as elective studies through a credit transfer procedure. 

KiVANET Online Language Courses

KiVANET (former name KiVAKO) is a joint project of 24 Finnish universities, with funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Students from the schools participating in the project can sign up for web-based language studies.

• Level 1 courses start from the basics. Levels above 1 require previous studies or skills sufficient for studies at the CEFR level mentioned. Before signing up, please read about web-based language learning and course selection .
• The starting page of each course includes a short course description and a link to the sign-up form.

• Each project university has a confirmed place for each course. Course places will be drawn among those who sign up. Therefore, sign-up order is not decisive. Places possibly left over will also be drawn.
