2023 Water Edström medal to Professor Gary Marquis

The International Institute of Welding IIW awarded Professor Gary Marquis the 2023 Water Edström medal. The award was presented at the association's annual meeting in Singapore in July.

The award is a recognition of a meritorious person who has made a significant contribution to the organisation's operations. 

Gary Marquis has participated in more than twenty IIW annual meetings and held several demanding positions of trust including eight years as Chair of Commission XIII and three years as Chair of the TMB. He was a member of the IIW Board of Directors for nine years including three years as President, one year as treasurer and three years as Chair of WG Governance.

He has worked at Helsinki University of Technology and Aalto University from 2008. First as a professor of Mechanics of Materials since and during 2013–2023 as dean of the School of Engineering. He has an MSc degree from the University of Illinois, and a PhD from Helsinki University of Technology.

The Swede Walter Edström (1891–1962) was one of the founders of the IIW in 1948, and persuaded several industrial companies to participate in the IIW's activities.
