A record number of graduates from the School of Chemical Engineering

In 2023, 199 students graduated with a Master of Science in Technology degree from Aalto University's School of Chemical Engineering. This is the highest number in the school's history. The school has seen a sharp increase in admissions over the past few years: Compared to 2019, the number of students has increased by almost 50%. About half of the students are women and almost a quarter have on international background.

‘There is a pressing need in society for graduates skilled in clean water, energy, and environmentally friendly processes, and we are meeting this demand. The green transition offers many exciting opportunities for recent graduates,’ says Dean Kristiina Kruus

Five years after graduation, 97% of chemical engineering graduates were in employment and more than four out of five would recommend the degree. Chemical engineering graduates go from sales to product development and from large companies to start-ups. Several are also attracted by jobs abroad.

‘Our graduates have problem-solving and critical thinking skills - qualities that are needed and valued in today's working world,’ says Kruus. ‘Also our Master's degree programmes in Chemical Engineering popular among applicants.’

Many industries need new materials to replace fossil-based or rare raw materials. There is a growing demand for professionals capable of developing new materials, which help to promote sustainability and provide innovative solutions for both consumers and industry.

'The Master's Programmes at the School of Chemical Engineering include subjects such as bio-based materials, the circular economy, electricity storage and battery technologies. By educating qualified experts in these fields, we can ensure that investments and innovations in sustainable development will continue to be possible in Finland,' says Professor Jouni Paltakari, Vice Dean of Education.

The School of Chemical Engineering is launching four new Master's Programmes this year, which received more than 1,000 applications from outside Aalto University in the call for applications that closed in January. Students can study biotechnologybioproductschemistry and materials science or chemical and metallurgical engineering

In 2023, more than 1,200 students graduated with a Master’s degree in engineering from Aalto. Applications for the Bachelor of Chemical Engineering programme will start on 13 March.
