Aalto University is ranked 5th in the world among Millennial universities, i.e. institutions that were founded in the 21st century. The list of Millennials is part of the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017 which lists 200 top universities in the world under 50 years of age. This ranking put Aalto in 27th place.

The ranking measures young universities on their teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. .

Times Higher Education (THE) publishes several rankings. In the more extensive THE World University Ranking, altogether 1000 universities were compared last autumn, and Aalto University was ranked 201–250. The THE Young University Rankings use the same performance indicators as this overall ranking though slightly modified. For example, reputation of the university has a smaller weight.
