The best indicator for Aalto was the amount of research income received from businesses.

Aalto University ranked 251–300 in the World University Ranking 2015–2016 of Times Higher Education (THE), published yesterday. Rankings specific to academic fields will be published later in the autumn.

800 universities from all over the world had been chosen to the comparison, and California Institute of Technology from the US was ranked first. The methodology of the ranking has changed from previous years.

13 indicators are used in the Times Higher Education rankings to measure the success of universities in five areas: international outlook, research, citations, teaching and industry income. Aalto University was most successful in the area of industry income, in which it was ranked 156th. 33% of the overall score of the ranking is based on a questionnaire survey on reputation.

Depending on the method of calculation, there are approximately between 17 000 and 22 000 universities in the world. Aalto University is specialised in technology, business and the arts, and highly values cooperation with companies. Field or subject specific rankings are the most relevant for Aalto University, as these depict the university's areas of operation better than general rankings.
