The Strategic Research Council SRC at the Academy of Finland decided on 19 June 2019 on the funding of 12 consortia under four programs. The funding for these 12 consortia totals 51 million euros of which Aalto University received EUR 9.2 million or 18 percent. Aalto University coordinates three consortia, led by Professors Minna Halme, Seppo Junnila and Jukka Seppälä. Aalto participates also in seven subprojects, led by Mikko Jalas, Sari Kujala, Annamari Vänskä, Kirsi Niinimäki, Herbert Sixta, Julia Lohmann and Monika Österberg.

Three consortia were selected within each of these programs:

  • Innovative Materials and Services to Promote Resource Wisdom and Sustainable Development (IMPRES)
  • The Evolving Role of Public Authority and the Potential for Steering Society (STEER)
  • Culture in an Increasingly Technologically Driven Society (CULT) and
  • Towards a Sustainable, Healthy and Climate-Neutral Food System (FOOD).

Long-term research that is aimed at identifying solutions to major societal challenges was emphasised in the selected projects. Each program is new and will be active until 2025.
