A total of 3 577 people applied for master's degree studies during the application period that ended at the end of January. Of these, 1 012 new students were selected.

The increase in the number of applicants was greatest in the field of business and economics (85.1 per cent). In the field of art and design, the number of applicants grew by 22.4 per cent and in the field of science and technology, growth was 1.5 per cent compared with the previous year.

The increase in applications for business and economics is partly attributable to the change in selection criteria for admission groups. In addition, changing the language of the business law programme from English to Finnish, and dropping the GMAT-/GRE test requirements probably helped increase the number of applicants for the programme.

Of the applicants 45 per cent had a Finnish higher education degree. As was the case in previous years, the greatest numbers of applicants with foreign degrees were from India, China, Pakistan, Great Britain, the United States, and Iran. All in all, applications came from 97 different countries.

The majority of applicants for business and economics applied on the basis of a Finnish higher education degree. A third of applicants applied on the basis of a higher education degree completed abroad. The most popular target programmes were Management and International Business and yritysjuridiikka (business law, programme available only in Finnish).

In art and design, 39.5 per cent applied for admission on the basis of a Finnish higher education degree. Most of the applicants applied with a foreign degree, the top countries were China, Great Britain, the United States, and India. The most popular target programmes were Product and Spatial Design and New Media Design and Production.

In the field of science and technology, the number of applicants with a Finnish higher education degree declined by 10 per cent, but the number of applicants increased in nearly all of the Finnish-language programmes. As was the case in previous years, the greatest number of applicants came from Finnish institutions of higher education, as well as Pakistan, India, China, and Iran. The most popular target programmes were Automation and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management, and the main subjects of the Computer, Communication and Information Sciences programme – Computer Science and Communications Engineering.
