Aalto University and Valmet challenge Junction participants to create a Service Workshop of the Future
Paper, board and pulp drying machine rolls need grinding service for thousands of hours per year. A roll that is not geometrically optimal can cause losses at 50 € per minute. Aalto Industrial Internet Campus and challenge the Junction participants to enhance roll grinding with sensor data and visualization tools.
With more than 1400 participants last year Junction is Europe’s biggest hackathon. Junction 2019 takes place in Otaniemi on 15-17 November. The hackathon brings together developers, designers and other tech-minded people to create new projects and solve intriguing challenges.
How to visualize something so minuscule that it can’t be seen with bare eyes?
The Service Workshop of the Future challenge is excellent for hackers interested in recent developments in the fields of sensor ware, visualization tools and machine learning. The task is to find ways to make the grinding of industrial rolls more effective.
"We are waiting to encounter imaginative visualizations of phenomena that can't be seen with bare eyes. We also wish that all participants will have a weekend filled with moments of laughter and learning among data, paper machines and XR. It is extremely exciting to get the chance to organize a challenge with Valmet in a hackathon such as Junction," explains Jesse Miettinen, research assistant at Aalto Industrial Internet Campus.
Develop on ValmetXR platform
Participants are offered a chance to develop on ValmetXR platform. The platform provides efficient tools to build customized user-interfaces for documentation and training, by replacing typical manuals with immersive learning environment. ValmetXR incorporates virtual reality, mixed reality and interactive augmented reality experiences via smartphones, tablets and VR/MR headsets in a virtual platform.
Aalto University and Valmet also provide mentoring for roll grinding, roll behavior and services business. Example datasets demonstrating roll geometry and running paper machines are also provided.
