Aalto University Magazine explores growth from multiple perspectives
In his Openings column, President Ilkka Niemelä notes that education, research and innovation are prerequisites for all forms of growth: ‘Productivity growth springs from new ideas, technology and expertise, all of which require investment in research. Without new creative research and education, the productivity leap will fall far short.’
The main feature explores growth from the perspectives of wellbeing, sustainability and the future, with contributions from Otto Toivanen, Professor of Economics, Ä°dil Gaziulusoy, Professor of Sustainable Design, and Joona Lipponen, Chair of the Student Union AYY.
The On the go feature offers a glimpse of Aalto’s green campus and how it is being developed with respect for biodiversity.
Entrepreneurship looks at how the growth of new businesses is being supported through the Aalto Inventors programme, which helps researchers take ideas emerging from their research towards entrepreneurship. The article features quantum technology experts and their first experiences of taking the path towards entrepreneurship.
In the Who interview, we meet sound designer Pietu Korhonen, known for his work on awarded Finnish and international film productions. He was part of the team behind Fjord, awarded at Cannes this spring.
The science feature takes us to the frontier of materials research: what is it like to search for a material that, according to current knowledge, should not exist.
The issue also offers a glimpse into the Designs for a Cooler Planet exhibition, on display at Marsio in September and October.
Aalto University Magazine is published twice a year in Finnish and English. The magazine is freely available from distribution racks on the Otaniemi campus e.g. in the following buildings: Väre, Marsio, Dipoli, the Undergraduate Centre, and the Harald Herlin Learning Centre.
