Aalto’s business administration and marine engineering rise to the top 20 globally

Aalto placed in the top 100 in eight subjects in the ShanghaiRanking

Aalto University continues its excellent performance in the respected ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Altogether, eight subjects rank in the top 100 worldwide.

Business administration jumped to 17th position from last year’s 24th. Marine/ocean engineering rose to the 19th spot (last year 21st). Textile science and engineering, ranked for the first time, was 41st in the world, and library & information science placed 49th (last year 46th).

Four other Aalto subjects also ranked in the top 100. Management and telecommunication engineering were in the range 51–75, while electrical & electronic engineering and mining & mineral engineering ranked 76–100.

Harvard University in the US was the best performing institution in the ranking, taking first place in 11 fields.

The annual ShanghaiRanking evaluates universities in 55 subjects across the natural sciences and engineering, as well as medical, social and life sciences. The ranking does not assess subjects related to art and design. In total, over 1 900 universities were evaluated in 2023. The ranking uses a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of world universities, including research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.

Rankings

Aalto University performs well in international university rankings. In subject-specific rankings, we place 8th globally in art & design and are in the top 100 in several other subjects.
