"I chose business because it combines topics that I was already interested in at upper secondary school. It's important to understand how the world works and the School of Business provides a good foundation for that," explains Sanni. "It would be silly to think that only a certain type of person does well at the School of Business."

Many paths lead to the Aalto University School of Business. A fourth-year student of accounting from Rauma, Sanni selected the most traditional route and began her studies at the School of Business right after upper secondary school.

Diverse skills for working life

The freedom associated with studying business appeals to Sanni. This includes the freedom to choose from a wide range of courses and the freedom to complete studies in the manner that seems best for her. She is particularly happy that different learning styles are supported so that studies can be carried out using the methods that are most suitable for each person.

Sanni sees that same kind of freedom in her future plans. Rather than focusing on a single career dream or job, she would prefer to keep all the options open while at university.

"I think it's more important to consider what I want to do in the future on the general level," says Sanni. "The only way to be sure of finding the right path is to try different things. It will be easy to find the most appealing career while I'm studying at the School of Business. On the other hand, the tasks I perform will have a lot of influence on where I end up."

For Sanni, the greatest benefit of her studies to date has been the diverse combination of theory and practice.

"It has been interesting to notice how the theory learned in lectures is linked to practice, particularly when working on case assignments. The School of Business allows us to see both these sides, and it brings a multidimensional aspect to the studies," explains Sanni.

"Being active in student organisations has also taught me important skills for working life: coordination, self-expression, effective time use, and group work skills."

Choices based on personal interests

Sanni warmly recommends that people with an interest in the socially influential field of business apply ºÚÁÏÍø University School of Business.

She suggests that anyone who is considering applying should pick up the entrance exam books and examine their content. If the books contain something interesting, it's worth applying. It's easy to combine personal areas of interest with the degree and there are plenty of options with regard to the courses offered at the School of Business. It's also possible to complete courses in other Aalto University schools and even at host universities in other countries.

"The School of Business makes it very simple to complete exchange studies and I encourage everyone to take advantage of that opportunity at least once during their university studies!" says Sanni. "During my exchange, I was able to complete courses that aren't available at Aalto. Studying and living abroad not only opened my eyes to other cultures but also showed me what Finns are like."

The joint application for business is open 16 March–6 April, and next autumn hundreds of new students will once again begin their studies at Aalto University School of Business. What is the most important piece of advice that an experienced student would like to give a new student?

"Boldly take part in new things outside your own comfort zone. Keep all doors open right from the start ‒­ an open-minded approach makes it easier to consider different options and combinations. The more unusual courses and programmes teach you to think in new ways."
