Alumni encounters from Duluth to Jakarta

President Ilkka Niemelä emphasizes that Aalto's greatest impact on society arises from the people educated at the university.
"Over 100,000 of our alumni are important influencers in societies, the business world, and other organizations in more than 100 countries. The impact of Aalto graduates can be seen in many different ways around the world, for example, in how services are designed and cities are built, in how financial markets operate, and in how we utilize technology. Our alumni can influence a sustainable future for the world every day through their choices and decisions."
We want to build an active international alumni community that consists of numerous local alumni networks around the world. The key figures in these networks are alumni ambassadors, whom we support in brainstorming and organizing activities. The more people are involved in the activities, the more fun it is!
Last July 2024, we invited alumni to Duluth, Minnesota, for the annual FinnFest festival. At this event directed at Finnish-American families living in the United States, we conveyed information about Aalto as a place of study and Aalto University Junior offered engaging workshops for the participants.
In August, we received a new alumni ambassador from Manchester, Aniket Kulkarni, who also joined the Unibuddy platform as a volunteer, where those planning to study at Aalto can discuss study- and Finland-related questions with alumni and students.
Thanks to the alumni, the documentary film Radical Creatives had its German premiere in early autumn in Hamburg.

"It was a pleasure to participate in Aalto University's first alumni event in Munich! It was wonderful to meet many familiar faces, exchange experiences, and reconnect with the Aalto community in an international setting. I look forward to discussions with our global alumni network," says alumna Maria Korpela, one of the 60 alumni joining the event.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with other alumni," says Birkan Åžolpan at the event held in Istanbul in October, where Aalto's student marketing team, together with Communications Director Laura Aalto, met with alumni in conjunction with student recruitment fairs.
The team also participated in student recruitment fairs in Romania and Poland, where local alumni supported marketing efforts by sharing their own experiences of studying at Aalto with the fair visitors.

In September, Professor Michael Hummel introduced the activities and origin story of Aalto Bioinnovation Center to alumni in New York. The unique interdisciplinary research center and its establishment through donations sparked lively discussions about the importance of fundraising and donations for the university.

In November, the Finnish Ambassador to Indonesia, Pekka Kaihilahti, hosted an event in Jakarta that brought together alumni from several Finnish higher education institutions. Many of Aalto's alumni had graduated from the former EMBA program of Aalto Executive Education in Bandung.

In November, over 70 Aalto University alumni and friends also gathered in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam, Keijo Norvanto, opened the events by emphasizing the importance of universities in strengthening the relationship between Vietnam and Finland. Dean Timo Korkeamäki brought greetings from Aalto and the School of Business to the events.

The UK premiere of the documentary film Radical Creatives in London attracted 50 Aalto alumni and friends in November. The film provoked thoughts and discussions about the need for creativity in solving the world's major problems. The Finnish Ambassador, Jukka Siukosaari, joined in celebrating the power of radical creativity at an event hosted by President Ilkka Niemelä.

In Singapore, Aalto University Executive Education invited alumni to Finland Week organized by the embassy in December. During the week, presentations were given on topics such as Nordic leadership and innovation as well as opportunities to study sustainable development.

In December, we invited alumni to meetings in Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore in India, where a group of Aalto representatives was on a business trip to visit local higher education institutions and participate in student recruitment fairs.

The year 2025 began with a gathering of 50 alumni at Felleshus in Berlin in January. Professor Jens Schmidt's presentation sparked lively discussions about the importance of radical creativity in generating innovations. The topic continued to be discussed after the Radical Creatives film, during a panel discussion featuring Professor Alf Rehn and Jens Schmidt.
In February, we will meet alumni in Seattle, Chicago, and San Francisco. Events are also being planned for the spring in the Nordic countries, Germany, India, and London, among other places.
