Architecture, construction and competence as themes of FWBN

Welcome to the Forum Wood Building Nordic organised at Aalto University on 15-17 June 2016.
The conference brings together academics and practitioners to exchange experiences and learn from the forefront in the field.

Quality wooden architecture has always been a result of successful collaboration. When professionals from different fields combine their knowledge, experience and skill toward a common goal, they achieve more together than they could alone. This is the aim of the Forum Wood Building Nordic 2016 – to bring architects, engineers, researchers, developers, contractors, manufacturers and industry professionals together to share their experiences and update their perspectives on the field of wood building.

The 2016 Forum is organized this summer at Aalto University (Espoo), where visitors can enjoy a diverse program of presentations spanning from effective methods of wooden high-rise construction to traditional techniques for renovating historic wooden buildings. Together we will share the knowledge of our successes (and our equally valuable failures) in order to consider the possibilities of the future.

Some of our special guests will include:

Gert Wingårdh

Architect and Professor, Sweden

As an architect who has completed a multitude of buildings from very small to extra large, Gert Wingårdh will discuss the opportunities and challenges of building with wood and the role of the material at varying scales in the urban environment.

Tomi Timonen

Mayor of Pudasjärvi, Finland

As Mayor of a small town in Northern Finland, Tomi Timonen has been part of a radical experiment based on a simple idea. After years of problems from mold and moisture, the school buildings of Pudasjärvi and their students were suffering. So when it came time to construct a new campus on the Iijoki River, the local government decided to return to the time-tested method of building with logs sourced from local forests. The Mayor will give an overview of the project and an update on the challenges and opportunities that it has created from an economic and political point of view.

Martin Tamke

Architect and Associate Professor
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts

Coming from the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture (CITA) in Copenhagen, Martin Tamke will present design research that investigates the relationship between architecture and digital technology. With projects that explore new tools for design and production Martin and his colleagues operate at the leading edge of computational design in order to explore future techniques of making buildings.

Welcome ºÚÁÏÍø University on 15–17 June 2016 to renew your knowledge in wood construction, meet the leading experts in the field and enjoy the Finnish summer
