Bengt Holmström to promote doctoral student research

Nobel Prize Laureate Bengt Holmström will be linked to Helsinki Graduate School of Economics and Hanken as Hanken Foundation Distinguished Fellow as of 1 January 2020.

Nobel Prize Laureate Bengt Holmström will be linked to Helsinki Graduate School of Economics and Hanken as Hanken Foundation Distinguished Fellow as of 1 January 2020.

The mission of the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics, established in the spring of 2018, is to expand the scope and improve the quality of education and research in economics in Finland, as well as to promote cooperation between economics and other fields of science. The Helsinki Graduate School of Economics is a unit jointly managed by Aalto University, the University of Helsinki and the Hanken School of Economics.

Bengt Holmström focuses on promoting doctoral research in Helsinki GSE.

‘Helsinki GSE’s mission is to produce outstanding research with maximum academic and social impact. We are extremely pleased that Bengt Holmström shares his knowledge with our doctoral students’, says Otto Toivanen, Academic Director of Helsinki GSE.

Holmström has worked at top US universities such as Northwestern, Yale and MIT. Holmström received his undergraduate degree from the University of Helsinki and defended his doctorate at Stanford.

In his own research, Holmström specialises in theoretical microeconomics, especially research on incentive problems.

In 2016, he was the first Finn to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics with Oliver Hart at Harvard.
