The works of the “Ceramics and its Dimensions: Shaping the Future” exhibition discuss the future of ceramics by exploring new techniques and rethinking materials. Both teaching and research staff, as well as students of Aalto University have contributed to the exhibition with their works. The exhibition is curated and produced by the Department of Design in Aalto ARTS and it will open in its fifth venue, the Bröhan-Museum in the end of January.

The exhibition, that will be on display in Berlin for the spring, is part of the European “Ceramics and its Dimensions” project which examines European ceramics from the perspectives of the past as well as of the future and explores new opportunities. It is a cooperation with three European universities: Ulster University (Northern Irland), Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee (Germany) and Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademis Skoler for Arkitektur, Design og Konservering - KADK (Denmark).

The “Ceramics and its Dimensions: Shaping the Future” began by an experimental workshop in spring 2016. The exhibition opened first in Fiskars in 2016 and has since then been touring in Europe: Germany, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. After Berlin it will move to Ljubljana and finally reach Prague in late 2018.

The project is led by Professor Maarit Mäkelä from the Aalto University Department of Design. The European “Ceramics and its Dimensions” project is coordinated by the Porzellanikon porcelain museum in Selb, Germany, and the project has eighteen partner institutions in eleven different countries. The project is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
