The Finnish design world has lost one of its most influential figures, Professor Yrjö Kukkapuro. In a career spanning more than 60 years, Kukkapuro created many classic pieces of furniture and was particularly famous for his chair designs. His work is on permanent display at the MoMa in New York and the V&A Interior Design Museum in London.

Kukkapuro's long career was an exceptional combination of artistic vision, functionality and ergonomics. His iconic furniture are not only masterpieces of aesthetics and ease of use, but also testaments to timeless design that endures from generation to generation.

Yrjö Kukkapuro was Professor (1974-1980), Rector (1978-1980) and teacher at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, the predecessor of the Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture in the 1990s.

"Kukkis" - as he was called by colleagues and students alike - impressed people not only with his work but also with his kindheartedness.

Our warmest thoughts and condolences to his loved ones.

The Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture will fly flags on campus at half-mast on 1 March 2025 in memory of Yrjö Kukkapuro.
