The 10th Nordic Design Research Society (NORDES 23) Conference was organized by Linköping University in Sweden. The conference took place in the university’s Norrköping campus on 12–14 June 2023. The theme of NORDES 23 was “This space INTENTIONALLY left [blank].”

NORDES 23 gathered design researchers and PhD students from the world over. A total of 25 full papers and 21 exploratory papers were presented during the three-day conference. The Doctoral Consortium arranged as part of the conference offered 45 doctoral students an arena to develop their short papers and get experience in presenting at a conference.

From the Empirica research group, we were altogether four participants. On the first conference day, Professor Maarit Mäkelä chaired one session and post-doctoral researcher Priska Falin presented the full paper The possibilities of geopolymers for greener studio ceramics (Kaarakainen, J., Falin, P., Huaman, L., Mäkelä, M., Lautenbacher, N., 2023). Doctoral researcher Sara Hulkkonen participated in the PhD Consortium by presenting the short paper Exploring and analysing glassblowing process: case study on movement. On the second day of the conference, Professor Julia Lohmann held the keynote lecture Being more like seaweed. Additionally, from the Department of Design, Adjunct Professor of Environmental Policy Eeva Berglund chaired one session as well as presented the full paper Teaching design for sustainability from the classroom: Uncomfortable reflections from a comfortable place (Berglund, E., 2023). Noteworthy from Empirica's perspective is that the first-day keynote lecturers, Dr. Kristina Lindström and Dr. Åsa Ståhl, have closely collaborated with the Soil Laboratory project.

The Nordes conference is a bi-annual conference series that started in 2005. Since 2021 the proceedings have been published in the Design Research Society’s Digital Library. The Nordes 2023 research papers are here:

E-scooters are here to stay – first global study maps the state of shared micromobility

Shared e-scooters, city bikes and other small vehicles have evolved from niche experiments into a standard part of urban transport worldwide. Rather than treating micromobility as a passing trend, public authorities should take an active role in shaping its development, researchers say.
