D.Sc. (Tech.) Jaakko Jääskeläinen (b. 1988) has been appointed Professor of Practice of energy markets at Aalto University's School of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for the period from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2027.

At the same time, Jääskeläinen continues his profession of Lead Energy Market Analyst at the international software company , where he started in April 2021. There he has been spearheading advanced modelling mainly for the Nordic power market and hydropower.

Jääskeläinen specialises in the Finnish and European energy markets. He defended his dissertation at Aalto University in 2019 on the very current topic Interdisciplinary assessment of energy security risks in the Finnish energy market. The dissertation examined energy security risks in the Finnish energy market, focusing on generation adequacy. The study investigated, among other things, the adequacy of electric power during winter peaks now and in the future, the impacts of an extreme drought on the adequacy of electric power, the prospects of combined power and heat production (CHP) in Finland, and energy import dependence.

Between 2019 and 2021, Jääskeläinen worked as an Energy Market Analyst at UPM Energy, where he focused on data-driven analysis and power market modelling. His responsibilities included medium- and long-term PLEXOS modelling and model development for the Central and Western European markets.

'The energy sector is currently undergoing a major transition. I welcome Jaakko Jääskeläinen join us and I am happy that he brings his expertise and connections with the industry to the benefit of our students,' says Gary Marquis, Dean of the School of Engineering.

'I'm excited about the opportunity to be able to pursue my interests in academia while working at Energy Exemplar. I will strive to bridge the gap between academic studies and the energy industry and provide tools for the next generation of energy market experts to solve real-world challenges arising from the energy transition,' says Jääskeläinen.

Jääskeläinen lectured and was involved in supervising Aalto University's theses in the field of energy during his doctoral studies. Between 2019 and 2022, he continued as a guest lecturer in the AAE-E3006 Energy Market course of the Advanced Energy Solutions master's program.

Jääskeläinen graduated with a Master of Technology in Energy Technology with distinction from Aalto University in 2013. During his studies he was active in Lämpövoimakerho (LVK), where he acted as the chairman in 2012.

Professor of Practice is a fixed-term and part-time position in which managers and experts from companies or the public sector are invited to act as a developer and bridge builder between the university and industry. The focus of the job profile is on teaching.
