Improvement in the Times Higher Education ranking
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking 2014 also put Aalto University in the 251-275 bracket in the general ranking list, a marked improvement from last year's position of 301-350.
The engineering and technology list of the THE ranking included 100 universities around the world. Aalto University was the only Finnish university in the list, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took the top spot. The general ranking list covers 400 universities. This year, the highest ranking Finnish university was the University of Helsinki (103). Top spot in the general rankings was taken by the California Institute of Technology.
The Times Higher Education Ranking list uses 13 indicators to evaluate universities regarding their teaching, research, societal impact and internationalisation. A university's ranking is weighted in accordance with a survey of its reputation (33%) and its research influence (30%), which is measured by collecting data on the number of times that a university's published work is cited by scholars globally.
