In memoriam: Omar Velazquez, M.Sc., Doctoral Candidate

Omar Velazquez Martinez joined the Aalto community in 2015 as a student of the international European Minerals Engineering Course. From the very beginning, Omar became an active member of the Aalto community, whether supporting activities of the Student Guild, offering invited lectures or hosting new students in our School.

In 2017, Omar started his Doctoral degree studies working on the development of engineering parameters in support of the circular economy. His research was part of nationwide research programs, including the CloseLoop project from the Academy of Finland and, later on, the BATCircle consortium. His work on the use of statistical entropy as a tool for circular economy has made a particular impact on the scientific community, sparking the interest of experts in the field and even finding its implementation in commercial simulation software.

Omar was awarded the 鈥淎alto CHEM Research Action of the Year鈥 in 2018 and he was a recipient of the CONACyT Scholarship for Doctoral studies from his home country, Mexico. As anyone who had the fortune to know him can attest, Omar was above all a friendly spirit, an optimist character and a promising researcher that is gone much too soon. Omar passed away on the 24th of September 2020. May he rest in peace.

Messages of condolence and support can be sent to his family via email to: raul.velazquez at me.com
