Jouko Lampinen, Dean of the School of Science since 1 June 2016, held a departmental meeting yesterday for the Department of Computer Science to give an update on the future leadership of the department.

‘It has been great to have been a part of founding the new Department of Computer Science for the past year and a half. As soon as I found out about my new appointment as the dean of the school, we started discussing the choice of new head of department. And we had a clear consensus on who to appoint’, says Lampinen.

The management of the Department of Computer Science decided to propose Lauri Savioja as the new head of department. As the Dean of the School of Science, Jouko Lampinen has already made the final appointment.

‘So far, the department has been in good hands. I want to maintain that level or perhaps make things go even more smoothly’, explains future Head of the Department of Computer Science Lauri Savioja, who is currently at Stanford University.

Savioja has worked as a professor since 2003, and he has been the Head of the Department of Media Technology and the Deputy Head of the Department of Computer Science responsible for teaching at the department. In his research, Savioja focuses on computational room acoustics modelling. Savioja will be returning from his sabbatical at Stanford and taking over the role of head of department on 1 August 2016.

There is a temporary arrangement for the management of the Department of Computer Science in June and July: Pekka Orponen will head the Department of Computer Science over the summer, and Antti Ylä-Jääski and Heikki Saikkonen will continue as deputy heads of the department.
