Martti Hetemäki appointed professor of practice at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics

Martti Hetemäki, Doctor of Social Sciences, has been appointed as professor of practice at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics as of 1 October 2020. The professorship is shared equally by Aalto University and the University of Helsinki.

News updated on 23 March 2020 and again on 30 September 2020: Due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (covid-19), Permanent Secretary Martti Hetemäki will continue to direct the work of the Ministry of Finance of Finland until 30 September 2020 (not until the end of February or June as informed earlier), and thus, won’t start as professor of practice at the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics before 1 October 2020.

From 2013, Permanent Secretary Martti Hetemäki has directed the work of the Ministry of Finance of Finland. At the end of September 2020, he will be relinquishing his position.

Hetemäki has had a noteworthy career in the service of the Ministry. Before being appointed as permanent secretary, he served as an under-secretary and, prior to that, as director general of the Economics Department, among other positions. Hetemäki is also the chair of the board of Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund.

'Martti Hetemäki’s unique experience in the field of economic policy will enrich the research operations of the entire Helsinki GSE. I value his profound expertise, which will serve to promote the central goal of the Helsinki GSE: we support economic decision-making in the public and private sectors with the help of new research methods and materials,' says Ilkka Niemelä, president of Aalto University.

'We are happy to gain a professor of practice from the very top of Finland’s civil service to supplement the expertise held by the Helsinki GSE. Hetemäki’s professorship will significantly enhance the societal impact of the Helsinki GSE,' states Jari Niemelä, rector of the University of Helsinki.

'As I have previously publicly stated, assuming the position of professor of practice would be an interesting new challenge. It is great to get to tackle that challenge in the research community of the Helsinki GSE,' says Martti Hetemäki.

Martti Hetemäki has a doctoral degree in social sciences from the University of Helsinki.

The mission of the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics, established in the spring of 2018, is to expand the scope and improve the quality of education and research in economics in Finland, as well as to promote cooperation between economics and other fields of science. is a unit jointly managed by Aalto University, the University of Helsinki and the Hanken School of Economics.
