Matti Vaaja appointed Assistant Professor of Geoinformatics at Aalto University
Matti Vaaja, DSc, has been appointed Assistant Professor at Aalto University鈥檚 Department of Built Environment for the time period between 1 August 2017 and 31 July 2022. The professorship focuses on geoinformatics with special attention to digital photogrammetry.
Vaaja is an expert on, among other fields, photogrammetric measuring technology and 3D point cloud models, which are used for interior measurement of buildings, for land use and environmental planning and monitoring as well as in autonomous robotic cars to mention a few examples. Since 2010, Vaaja has served in various teaching and research assignments and as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research from 2014 onwards.
Since 2015, Professor Vaaja has acted as Project Manager in the Academy of Finland project STN COMBAT (technological breakthroughs of combined 3D digitalisation and robotics). As of early 2017, Vaaja has worked in the Tekes-funded VARPU project (Virtual and Augmented Reality Content Production and Use), which conducts research on 3D measuring technology and virtual reality as well as augmented reality for industrial applications. Both of these projects operate on the Finnish economic life鈥檚 central fields, such as construction, machine and processing industries, built environment, education and safety.
Matti Vaaja (born in 1983) received his education at Helsinki University of Technology. He graduated as Master of Science in 2010 and received his doctoral degree in 2014. His thesis, Feasibility of mobile laser scanning for mapping and monitoring a riverine environment, focused on geoinformatics.
