NGFW firewalls bypassed from the network

Short interruptions in Aalto data network have continued due to the firewall malfunction.

The firewall has now been bypassed from the network and the supplier will evaluate carefully all available log data to fix the errors .

We are sorry about the inconvenience. The firewall will not be taken back to the production until the root cause has been found. We will inform more when we are ready to proceed.

26.4.2018 - Network failures occurred

There have been short interruptions in Aalto data network on April 26 due to the firewall malfunction.

Unfortunately the software of the new firewall is still unstable even though the supplier has made many corrections. The problems are actively being investigated by evaluating carefully all available log data.

We are sorry about the inconvenience. The firewall will be bypassed from the production if the instability continues.

Firewalls will be taken into use again

Aalto ITS installed Next Generation Firewalls a few weeks ago but unfortunately firewall software were working unstably. The firewalls were taken out from the production network while the cause of the problems was solved together with the firewall supplier.

The causes have now been identified and the firewalls鈥 software have been upgraded in order to minimize the possibility of similar challenges.

The firewalls will be again taken into use on Wednesday, 25 April 2018 at 7 pm.  The change will not cause any network interruptions. However, the risk of unexpected network failures will be elevated until we are sure that the new software is working stably.

Centralized Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) will improve the security of Aalto IT environment. With NGFW, Aalto鈥檚 network will fulfill modern security requirements. Devices and data will be better protected against unauthorized use or data leaks.
