Nokia donates again to quantum and XG doctoral schools

Nokia's industrial doctoral schools in Aalto have been a success. Nokia donates another 480,000€ to them.

The Nokia Industrial Doctoral School in Quantum Technology at Aalto University started in year 2021 and the Nokia Industrial Doctoral School in XG Technology at Aalto University started in year 2022. Now, the donated funds will be used for further funding of ongoing doctoral projects and one new doctoral project.

The new doctoral thesis supervised by Professor Olav Tirkkonen deals with the topic AI/ML for Wireless - Build deep know-how on AI/ML for creating competitive 6G radio products. The recruitment of the PhD student has just started. The rest of the XG doctoral school mainly focuses on the energy efficiency of radio waves. The quantum doctoral school, on the other hand, focuses on quantum error correction and various applications of quantum computers and processors.

There are currently seven PhD students studying in the quantum doctoral school led by Professor Mikko Möttönen, and four PhD students in the XG doctoral school led by Professor Ville Viikari. Although the research has just began, the first publications are already being prepared.

“It is amazing that Nokia initiated and keeps supporting these new doctoral schools where inventions and talent is forged for the society. The students have here a unique opportunity to interact with the industry,” rejoices Möttönen.

The cooperation between Nokia specialists and Aalto researchers has been lively. In March, for example, the quantum groups went on a study trip to Nokia Bell Labs' Murray Hills in New Jersey and had their annual research seminar there.

"This doctoral school collaboration leverages the joint expertise of Nokia and Aalto University to build Nokia's future workforce," says Pertti Lukander from Nokia. “Research groups meet monthly with Nokia's key contacts. This ensures close communication and industry relevance.”
