In HCI we are going places, with the establishment of HCI-Helsinki, bringing together internationally leading researchers across both Aalto and Helsinki University

The Department of Computer Science at the Aalto University School of Science is presently looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher in Tangible Ubiquitous Computing and Healthcare

The position belongs to the Aalto career system and the selected person will be appointed for a two-year fixed term appointment.

The Post-Doc will work on the Nordforsk funded project:  ActivABLES: Tangible Interaction to Support Effective and Usable Stroke Rehabilitation at Home. The project aims to develop tangible devices and techniques to better support at-home rehabilitation for persons who have suffered mild stroke, or other physical injuries that require self-motivated rehabilitation exercises. Currently, such people must complete standard, repetitive activities of daily living (ADL) exercises. Making time and space for these, as well as their dull repetitive nature, can lead to high discontinuation and thus poorer rehabilitation outcomes. By developing novel multimodal (speech, non-speech, haptic, olfactory etc.) devices that can be flexibly incorporated into patients’ everyday lives, we hope to reduce discontinuation of self-motivated rehabilitation. The project is lead by the Department of Design Sciences at Lund University, Sweden, with Aalto and the Faculty of Nursing, University of Iceland as project partners. The successful candidate will work under Assistant Professor David McGookin at Aalto and closely with persons from both partner institutions to complete the work. .
