The award is granted every year to one researcher in the field to recognise their outstanding work in microwave technology research and service for the benefit of the European microwave community.

Räisänen received the award on 10 October in Nuremberg, Germany at the opening session of Microwave Week, which was attended by about a thousand researchers in the field. The award was presented by Professor Wolfgang Heinrich, EuMA President, and Professor Alex Yaravoy, Chair of the EuMA Awards Committee. In his presentation speech, Yaravoy stressed Räisäsen’s merits not only as a significant researcher, but also as the founder and a leading figure in the European Space Agency external laboratory, the Millimetre Wave Laboratory of Finland (MilliLab). MilliLab is a joint research institute of the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University which was founded in 1995.

Antti Räisänen has worked for Helsinki University of Technology and Aalto University as Professor of Radio Engineering since 1987, first as acting professor and from the beginning of 1990 as appointed professor. His research specialisms are millimetre-wave components and sensitive receivers, as well as antennas and antenna measurement techniques. Räisänen has also worked as a researcher and visiting professor at a number of top international universities, such as the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, the University of California, Berkeley, and California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He has also chaired several international microwave and millimetre-wave technology conferences.
