Provost Kristiina Mäkelä appointed to second term

The Aalto University Board appointed Professor Kristiina Mäkelä to a second term as Provost of Aalto University. The term is five years and starts on 1 December 2022.  The appointment was based on a normal re-evaluation process in which members of the university community and external stakeholders were consulted.

The provost acts as deputy president, supports the president in strategic development, the appointment of professors and resource management as well as leads the processes connected to education, research and societal impact.

Kristiina Mäkelä started her first term as provost in 2017. She has worked at Aalto University as professor of international business since 2013. In 2016, Kristiina Mäkelä was appointed Vice Dean of Teaching and Learning at the School of Business, and she has also worked as deputy head of the Department of Management Studies. She has been a visiting researcher and teacher in several universities abroad. In addition, she has over ten years of industry experience.

President of Aalto University Ilkka Niemelä says: ‘Kristiina Mäkelä has done an excellent job during her first term as provost. Her expertise and insights have been valuable as we have implemented our new strategy, and she has advanced significantly our academic career systems, community engagement and equality, diversity and inclusion issues with her encouraging and collaborative leadership approach. I’m very pleased to continue our well-functioning work together.’
