Rainer Paananen (born in 1990) is a Helsinki-based visual artist and a Master’s student of photography at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. His latest collection, Sound of Alchemy, began to emerge at the end of last year.

"I'm a musician and I use one-stringed instrument as a paintbrush, composing forms on a light-sensitive paper. The technical approach of my self-constructed device, as a brush, is influenced by a special technique used on building sites, where there is a dedicated tool, the color wire", Paananen explains the background of his works.

The title of the works, Composition, refers to the composition and the geometrical installation, based on the rectangular piece, The Wall. This piece Paananen carried around and photographed in natural scenery years ago.

Paananen is delighted about the visibility at the prestigious Photo London art fair. "I am very impressed that I had the opportunity to present my works in such an international event, which includes so much talent and creativity. Funnily, I had to sell some of my instruments to finance the costs. So now I’m left with the instrument I built and use for my art works", Paananen laughs.

Gallery Taik Persons, founded in Helsinki in 1995 and operating in Berlin since 2005, presents works by selected artists from Helsinki School. Helsinki School and Gallery Taik Persons have been born at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The founder of the gallery, Timothy Persons, is Adjunct Professor at Aalto University.

The Photo London art fair takes place in London from 16 to 19 May.
