My name is Johan Salim and I am a second-year student in the Mikkeli program. I am 20 years old and I am originally from Singapore but I have Finnish roots.

I attended high school here in Finland and have always been in an international program with all of my studies taking place in English. My personal interests include art, philosophy and economics. I have worked quite a bit during the summer 2021 in the F&B industry and I spent a few months tutoring English to children up to the age of 6.

What skills have you learned during your studies in Mikkeli that you find valuable?

I have learnt the importance of time management, keeping an open mind and perseverance. Keeping on schedule is important especially with the intensity of each course and perseverance does help in pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone to grow. As for keeping an open mind, I have come to learn that indeed we all think in different ways and are influenced by our own cultures. For such an international degree, I think it is vital to actively listen and collaborate to find solutions as opposed to brushing off the ideas of others.

What has been your favourite course and professor?

My favourite course has been French Business Communication with Josiane Peltier. I enjoyed being able to converse in French after taking a 2-year break and incorporating business concepts in a foreign language simulated my dream of working abroad. My classmates and I were very pleased with the teaching offered by Josiane. She is extremely patient and immaculately explained even the tiniest of grammar details and cultural quirks so that we’d have a true cultural immersion.

How have your studies in Aalto University and living in Mikkeli shaped you as a person?

Living in Mikkeli was initially tough but after getting to know people throughout the O-week events, I have formed a close circle of friends that I cherish and who have made my experience in Mikkeli more exciting.

My studies, which consists of a one course during the span of 3 weeks, have improved my focus and appreciation of teamwork.

Do you have a tip or advice for students who consider applying to the BScBA Program?

Go for it and don’t think too much. Reading about a program isn’t the same as experiencing it for yourself and I can tell you, my experience in the BScBA Program has surprised me positively over and over again. You will develop your EQ here and will be equipped with all the tools you need to head out and build the career of your dreams.

Would you recommend the BScBA Program to other students, if yes why?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend this program to other students because it allows you to meet the most diverse group of people ever in a tiny quaint town like Mikkeli. You become closer with everyone and there’s never a bad atmosphere in the school building.
