Campus Sustainability Champion 2026

The year 2026 is a jubilee year for choosing the campus sustainable development hero: the Sustainability Champion will be chosen for the tenth time already!

In May we celebrated the Otaniemi on a sustainable path theme month on campus, with the aim of inspiring and encouraging people to travel in sustainable ways. During the theme month, open events and campaigns were organised on campus for everyone, such as free bicycle maintenance, a traffic-themed pub quiz, and free morning porridge for cycle commuters.

This year’s theme for the campus sustainable development hero is also sustainable mobility. Which person, insight, action or community has promoted sustainable mobility on campus? A proposal can relate, for example, to research, teaching, art or student projects, or it can be a practical reform, measure or initiative on campus.

Submit before 15.10.2026!

Which person, insight, action or community has promoted sustainable mobility on campus?

Last year the Campus Sustainability Champion was the series of Planetary Practices Workshops. The reason given was the concrete hope generated by the workshops and the opportunity for everyone to influence a more sustainable future. Two honorable mentions were also awarded last year. The first honourable mention went to building manager Ilpo Korhonen, who through his daily work has promoted activities in line with sustainable development. The second honourable mention was awarded to the annual, open-to-all, low-threshold recycling event ‘Take it or leave it’ held in the lobby of the Undergraduate Centre.

The winner is chosen by the Campus sustainability team. The Campus Sustainability Champion will receive a small theme-appropriate prize as well as fame and visibility as a promoter of sustainable development on campus. The prize will be awarded later in the autumn at an event organised on campus.

We need growth – but what exactly are we growing?

Governments demand it, companies promise it, and universities are expected to deliver it. Growth is widely seen as the answer to debt, competitiveness, and the future of the welfare state itself. But what do we actually mean by growth – and what kind of growth are we aiming for?
