We sat down with Judith Gilbrich from Dresden, Germany, to discuss her experience of the Personal Growth and Renewal course at Aalto University Summer School. Judith is working towards her master’s in International Social Work and describes herself as curious and open-minded, who likes to dive into situations and places without further expectations.

As a first-time visitor to both Finland and Aalto University, Judith expresses how impressed she was by Aalto University.

‘All the buildings have such a rich historical background. I recommend taking the campus tour while here to learn more about the history of the university. Aalto also definitely lives up to its reputation of supporting innovation and creativity; you can truly feel that any idea is possible within these walls,’ states Judith.

The best part was not knowing

At the start of our interview, Judith requested, ‘Please avoid revealing too many details about the different parts of the course program – it will ruin the element of surprise.’

As Judith mentioned, the Personal Growth and Renewal course is all about opening your mind, digging deeper into yourself, and surrendering to the unknown. Students are told to show up at a certain place at a certain time each day during the course, but no details are revealed. Each session revolves around a specific theme that supports the student’s own growth journey.

Assignments and tasks were completed by using traditional notebooks, and students were encouraged to shut off their digital devices during the sessions to get the most out of the experience and be present as a group.

‘For example, we officially introduced ourselves to our coursemates and the course teachers after two weeks together, on the last day of the course, instead of in the beginning. We had to get to know each other by truly speaking to each other and asking questions,’ says Judith.

‘I have taken courses in self-development before, but nothing like this, this was something special. As a social worker, I have the responsibility to develop myself in order to help others. The course description really spoke to me, as I was intrigued by the thought of not sitting in a lecture hall all day, but really getting ourselves out there and stepping outside of our comfort zones. This course made me realise that I am on the right path’, Judith concludes.

Judith's top three takeaways from the course

  1. You’re more than your CV

Follow your dreams and don’t get attached to titles and degrees. This course taught me that everything will turn out okay in the end. You are the only person who truly knows what’s best for you. I dream about pursuing a second degree and eventually working as a midwife, and my learnings from this course have encouraged me to think more realistically about that career option in the future.

  2. Allow yourself to be surprised

Be open and avoid presumptions about the things and people around you.

  3. Never stop develop

It’s always worthwhile to work on yourself, become a better version of who you are, and not be afraid of change.
