Textbook and non-fiction writers – did you know you are entitled to public lending right compensation?

All authors who have written text for a work that is lent out from libraries are entitled to public lending right compensation.

All authors who have written text for a work that is lent out from libraries are entitled to public lending right compensation. Writers who have registered as a client of the literary copyright society Sanasto and submitted information on their works by 19 September 2025 will receive the distribution paid in October, in which lending compensation for the year 2024 will be distributed for the first time.

PLR funding is provided by the Finnish government and payments are made to right holders by reference to the number of occasions on which their works are lent out. Sanasto receives statistics regarding the loans from both public libraries as well as educational and research libraries. Remuneration may be claimed only for lending that has occurred within the last three years.

Why register with Sanasto?

  • Sanasto will automatically pay the compensation you are entitled to for the library lending of your works.
  • Lending compensation is paid retroactively for three years. The compensation for loans in 2019–2024 has been 25–32 cents per loan.
  • Lending compensation is distributed twice a year – in the autumn and the spring.
  • No registration fee is required.

Register as a client as follows:

  • Register as a client of Sanasto by logging in with your Finnish bank identifiers to the oma.sanasto.fi online service.
  • Add your list of works to the service. Remember to add all the different editions and their ISBN numbers.
  • Keep your contact details and list of works up to date. Sanasto will distribute your compensation according to its payment schedule.
