The direct D2D test-bed demo in Mobile World Congress
Aalto is participating in Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society . In METIS, researchers at the Department of Communications and Networking have been developing technology that allows direct network controlled device-to-device (D2D) communication in future mobile communication systems. The direct D2D test-bed is currently being demonstrated at the Ericsson booth in Mobile World Congress 2-5 March 2015 in Barcelona.
The main objective of METIS is lay the foundation of 5G, the next generation mobile and wireless communications system. Direct D2D refers to network-controlled direct communication between devices (e.g. smart phones) without user-plane traffic going through any network infrastructure. Direct D2D can be utilized to improve spectrum efficiency, reduce latency, improve reliability, and to enable new services and applications that benefit from local connectivity and low latency.
