The European roadmap for graphene science and technology

Aalto researchers’ interests are particular on Sensors, Photonics and Optoelectronics themes.

Aalto University has been actively involved in laying out graphene science and technology roadmap for the next 10 years and beyond.

“This roadmap paper presents the huge capability of graphene science and technology for a large variety of applications, potentially benefiting most areas of our daily life. For example, we see the great possibility of graphene for a large range of sensor applications, which are expected to contribute to the internet of things in the future,” comments Pertti Hakonen, the deputy leader of the Sensors work package of the Flagship.

“Photonic and optoelectronic application is identified as one of the most promising applications for graphene and related 2d materials, which is anticipated to enter the industrial prototyping phase soon,” adds Zhipei Sun who recently moved to Finland to lead the Photonics research group at Aalto. Both Prof. Hakonen and Prof. Sun have contributed as authors to this comprehensive European roadmap.

In an open-access paper published 24th of February in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Nanoscale. The roadmap covers the next 10 years and beyond, and its objective is to guide the research community and industry toward the development of products based on graphene and related materials.

Roadmap timelines predict that, before the end of the 10-year period of the flagship, products will be close to market in the areas of flexible electronics, composites, and energy.

Europe's Graphene Flagship lays out a science and technology roadmap, targeting research areas designed to take graphene and related 2d materials from academic laboratories into society.

In October 2013, academia and industry came together to form the Graphene Flagship. Now with 142 partners in 23 countries, and a growing number of associate members, the Graphene Flagship was established following a call from the European Commission to address big science and technology challenges of the day through long-term, multidisciplinary R&D efforts.


Aalto Univesity is one of the Finnish partners of this Flagship research initiative. The research groups run by Professors Pertti Hakonen and Harri Lipsanen are responsible for sensor development and production of high frequency transistors.  Other Finnish partners are Nokia Finland, University of Eastern Finland and
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.
